Activities

Horse Riding & Pony Trekking

Riding in Scotland is an experience not to be missed. There are a huge number of landscapes in Scotland for you to enjoy on horseback, with its unspoilt countryside, stunning beaches, jagged peaks of the Highalands and ancient forests and woodlands. Experiencing Scotland by saddle gives the opportunity to get closer to some of Scotland's abundant wildlife, including seals, otters, deer and red squirrels.

Brechin Castle Equestrian

Instruction and hacking is available at Brechin Castle Equestrian and is probably the nearest centres to The Haven Guest House. Show jumping, dressage and eventing is also on site as well as full, part and grass livery spaces.

Walking & Hiking

Walks within the county of Angus include riverside paths, moorland hill passes, forest walks and sandy beaches. In length the walks range from 1/2 mile (1km) to 14 miles (22.5km); from light strolls to strenuous hill climbs.  A few have been included here, for more and a guide to these walks, and more, please ask Laura or Terri at The Haven B&B.

North East Scotland's Coastal Trail

Some of Europe's finest and unspoilt coastline awaits you on the North east Coastal Trail, and, starting at St. Cyrus, Montrose is close enough to embark on your adventure through rich heritage, breath-taking views and many harbour pubs!

Montrose Basin

One of the closest walks to the Guest House, this walk is quite short through grazing land by a muddy estruary with fine bird watching.
The length of the walk is 3 miles (5km) and the height climb is negligible. Comfortable footwear is recommended.

Lunan Bay

Situated four miles from Montrose, this is a fine walk along sandy beaches, with possible extensions along cliff-tops to a 19th-century fishing village.
Length is 6 miles (9.5km), there and back and also the height climb is negligible. Strong/comfortable footwear and waterproof clothing are required.

Ferryden

Ferryden is just outside Montrose and this walk is a fine coastal walk with good coastal views that follows a quiet public road and rough paths.
The length of this walk is 5 miles (8km) and the height climb is negligible. Strong footwear and waterproof clothing is required.

Surfing

Both Cruden Bay and Balmedie work best on swells from the south which can be useful when locations to the north aren’t picking up any waves. Aberdeen has some popular breaks, obviously due to their proximity to the city. Once again, Aberdeen Beach works best on south swells and since the beach is so long, you’ll be able to pick your own peak on good days. Slightly further south, Nigg Bay picks up large north swells which produce waves over a boulder reef. Finally, Lunan Bay is a beautiful spot which can work on all tides.

Kite Surfing

Just to the north of the city of Aberdeen is the start of a beach which stretches unspoilt and uninterrupted for 11 and a half miles. With it’s beautiful golden sands and impressive dune systems this beach offers an extensive playground for kitesurfers from wave riding to freestyle and even down winders covering the entire 11 and half miles. There are three main access points to this stretch of beach, all of which are located within nature reserves and it is therefore advised that users park in the car parks provided and adhere to good practice both on and off the water. As with many beaches in the UK high tides can vastly reduce the amount of usable beach space and consideration for other users is advised.
