Local Attractions

Montrose has so much to offer, whether you want local activities or easy access to regional attractions. Montrose is a town with a long history. 10,000 years ago, after the glaciers of the Ice Age had melted, the area was an open bay. Gradually the shingle ridge grew, cutting off the westward section to form Montrose Basin, the largest tidal lagoon in Scotland, Sand dunes developed to the east forming the Links, while mud and silt collected on the west. Traditionally this division of the town has been described as the "Sand Half", and the "Clay Half". The Basin, which fills and empties with the tide, is home to many thousands of wildfowl. The bands of geese flying overhead are a winter feature of the town.

Montrose Seafront

Montrose Seafront is located on Traill Drive, just 10 minutes walk from The Haven and is one of Scotland's most extensive golden beaches that has achieved the internationally recognised Blue Flag Award. Located at the seafront is ample parking on the promenade, picnic tables, well maintained public toilets and The Montrose Seafront Splash; a modern play area that allows children of all ages to play safely while parents can enjoy stunning views from the seafront cafe next door. The family run cafe also hosts an amusement centre.

Montrose Air Station Heritage Centre

Montrose Air Station was Britain's first operational military airfield. Set up by the Royal Flying Corps in 1913, it dates from the very early period of manned flight where planes were, quite literally, kites.
The Heritage Centre's fine collection of contemporary photographs, artefacts and memorabilia is used to tell the story of the airfield through the memories and experiences of the thousands of men and women who served there between 1913 and 1950.

Montrose Sculpture Trail

At the start of the 20th century Montrose had a modest selection of typically Victorian works of the type found in other small burghs, and which largely go unnoticed. The decorative wells, war memorials and early statues all reward closer examination for their historical interest as well as the superb craftmanship and have been included in a guide. Please ask for this guide if you are interested in taking the local trail of Montrose sculpture.
